ILF has been appointed by Callaghan Innovation to a panel of strategists for their programme Beyond IP, which seeks to assist New Zealand businesses to better understand, manage and leverage their intangible assets.

Intangible assets usually represent around 80% or more of the value of a business. We know this by comparing book values of listed companies to their market values. Yet most businesses would spend far less than 80% of their time proactively managing their intangible assets, their most valuable assets.

Intangibles or Intellectual assets are business assets and create value in many ways including:

• Increasing profitability or competitiveness through improved margins, reducing costs or increasing market share

• Securing investment or lending

• Enabling collaboration with third parties in R&D or joint ventures

• Enabling licensing business models to reduce risk and enhance profitability

• Delivering marketing advantages

• Signalling innovative activity for potential merger and acquisitions

• Enhancing and sustaining competitive advantage

• Enabling more efficient exits (eg in a trade sale or end of a joint venture)

The Beyond IP programme will help increase the sophistication of the intellectual asset management function of your business, and enable greater understanding of how your intangible assets are supporting your business strategies.

Our Beyond IP programme starts with a workshop to understand your business model and strategies, what your current R&D pipeline is, where there is potential for the creation of intellectual assets including formal IP, and what intellectual assets may be necessary for the business strategies to succeed. The output from the workshop is a full IA Strategy with an Implementation Plan - setting out a list of actions, a timeline and budget for executing the strategy. The programme is "Powered by Callaghan Innovation" because they co-fund 40% of the cost of the strategy and certain implementation work up to $10,000 plus GST.
